The creation of new knowledge and innovation lies at the heart of the Women’s University in Africa. In order to advance knowledge creation, innovation and scholarship WUA created a research board, which is representative of university faculty. Why focus on research at WUA? In this global knowledge economy, universities in general have become pillars on which developing nations can compete with more technologically-advanced societies. Further, universities are often the only institutions with the capacity for the development of high-skilled manpower, technology transfer and generation of new knowledge. This makes research for development a priority for WUA as a university, for it fosters global competitiveness and attractiveness to not only world class scholars, but also prospective students, the industry and international funders. WUA promotes a research agenda that is primarily gender responsive and locally relevant too.


The core function of the Research Board is to increase quality of scholarship, research and elevate the reputation of WUA trough a number of activities which include:

· Management of research activities: including creation and management of a research database and repository; competitive appraisal of faculty proposals and resources disbursement;

· Facilitating enhancement faculty capacity to conduct research and also to attract research funds through training

· Fundraising: resources mobilization for supporting research and innovation

· Research outputs dissemination: publication of the WUA journal, exhibition in national and local intellectual symposia


The goals of the Research Board are to:

· Increase quality of scholarship, research and elevate the reputation of the institution

· Retain highly productive faculty and attract only the best (world-class scholars, teachers and researchers) to jump start research fundraising by creating a conducive research environment at WUA

· Consistently publish a world class peer reviewed journal quarterly

· To facilitate knowledge co-creation
